Wood-carved Bison head in memory of Count Joachim Dietlof von Arnim of Boitzenburg's attempt to preserve the European bison from extinction. Uckermark, Brandenburg, Germany Count von Arnim of Boitzenburg bred European bisons. By 1920, the bison was threatened with extinction, In 1923, the Society for the Conservation of the Wisent (Bison) was founded in Berlin, von Arnim was there and his bison herd grazed in its paddock in the shade of three giant trees until 1945. After the war the land was expropriated and poachers shot the bison.
