Its near- est relationship is probably with the Gadidw, although thnly, beginning on the head; anal similar, shorter; caudal various, sometimes coalescent with dorsal and anal; pectorals in8«^rted rather high, rarely wanting; veutrals under the pectorals, usu- ally of several soft rays, one of them sometimes wanting. Fishes mostly caruivorons, inhabiting sandy bottoms in all seas, some species ascending rivers. Many of them are important foo<l-fishes.
