MOSE flood barrier construction, Venice. The MOSE project is intended to protect the city of Venice, Italy, from extreme floods. This is part of the initial construction, involving the building of a stone reef outside each of the three inlets to the lagoon surrounding the island of Venice. This is the Malamocco inlet to the 550-square-kilometre lagoon. The Italian coast is seen on the horizon. Extreme flooding is predicted to worsen because of global warming. The main part of the MOSE project involves the construction of large moveable flaps anchored to the seabed, which will rise to block the inlets. The barriers will be built from 2006 to 2011.
