Photo from Koufonisi, one of the two tiny, uninhabited islands that you can find close to Ierapetra, south of Crete, Greece

This photo is taken in Koufonisi, one of the two tiny, uninhabited islands that you can find close to Ierapetra, on the south of Crete (the other one is Chrissi island or Gaidouronissi). This photo is taken close to one of the main beaches of the island, called "Theatro beach" because of an ancient theater of seats that you can find there. This is one of the many natural stone arches, that you can find there, called "Kamareles" by the locals. In the deep background you can see the southern coast of is a boat going, now and then to Koufonissi, departing from the village of Makrigialos, 25 km east of Ierapetra. The island is of great geological interest, there are hundreds of caves (some of them used as chapels in the old times). Talking about old times, Koufonisi is also of great archaeological interest and there are a lot of ruins spread around the island, dating from the early Minoan to late Byzantine era. Among them an ancient theater of seats!
