Cardinal Richelieu, c1637, (18th century). Armand Jean Duplessis, Duc de Richelieu (1585-1642), French prelate and statesman. Created Cardinal in 1624, he was Minister of State to Louis XIII and de facto ruler of France from 1629. Engraved portrait showing Richelieu surrounded by his achievements, including the crushing of Huguenots at La Rochelle in 1628, with the figure based on Philippe de Champaignes' portrait of c1637.
