Itwas finally determined to establish an institution of learning atXeosho, and the board of trustees, in the spring of 1861 votedto place him at the head of the proposed school, but the war be-ing at hand the enterprise was abandoned. The Pierce CityCollege is regarded as an outgrowth of this movement. has been from the beginning an active friend of this col-lege, and in 1882 was president of its board of trustees. In 1866 ho assisted in the organization of a few Baptists intoa church at Mt. Vernon, the county seat of Lawrence, ever sincewhich he has been their pastor. Under his ministration, the. PLEASANT GROVE AND OTHER ASSOCIATIONS. 735 church has enjoyed a good degree of prosperity. They have acommodious house of worship which was built largely throughthe liberality of Mr. Lollar. In 1871 the Lawrence County Association was formed, whenhe was elected moderator, and has for years been honored withthe same position. Truly may it be said that his praise is inall the churches ; called by many ^ the beloved disciple ; anenthusiastic Baptist; and a fearless defender of the faith whichwas once delivered to the saints.
