F-104 Starfighter. Lockheed F-104 Starfighter supersonic aircraft on the ramp at the NASA Flight Research Center (now the Dryden Flight Research Center) at Edwards Air Force Base, California, USA. The aircraft is shown with an Air Launched Sounding Rocket (ALSOR) attached to its underside. The F-104 Starfighter entered service with the US Air Force in February 1958. It had a crew of one, and could reach speeds of 2137 kilometres per hour (just over Mach 2). During 1958, it broke the world speed and altitude records. Photographed on 16 December 1959.
