Franklin Roosevelt and polio, 1920s. Future US President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) in Warm Springs, Georgia, USA, in 1924. His leg muscles are atrophied from the polio-induced paralysis that had occurred three years earlier. Polio, also known as poliomyelitis and infantile paralysis, is a childhood disease caused by a virus. Polio epidemics in the early 20th century left thousands paralysed. Roosevelt contracted polio as an adult at the age of 39 in 1921. He was left permanently paralysed from the waist down. His attempts to recover included visiting mineral springs in Georgia. He bought a resort at Warm Springs, Georgia, founding what is now the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation.
