Mayor Dick Whittington's Almshouses, College Hill, London, England
Illustration from Old & New London published circa 1876. Dick Whittington was a real person, the myth was that he was leaving London having failed to achieve his riches when he believed he heard a message in the ringing of Bow Bells saying turn again Whittington, once, twice, thrice lord mayor of London. He was actually mayor 4 times. Twice whilst also being mayor of Calais. Not bad for someone who a lot of people think is just a character in a pantomime.
