Whenever it got loose, it visited the shopsin the neighborhood, and would make free with fruit, sugar, sweetmeats, &c;to obtain which it would open the boxes. At such times, it was difficult toretake it; and it would bite those that attempted it, even its keeper. THE RED AND BLACK This is not only one of the most beautiful of the group to which il 1 femur monsfooz. 2 Lemur ruber. MAMMALIA—LEMUR. 89 belongs, but it also possesses the additional recommendation of beingunquestionably the rarest known species. Very little was known of it till aliving individual was brought to Europe, and figured by M. Cuvier, in hissplendid work. A specimen in the collection at Exeter Change has sincebeen noticed by Mr Griffith. The color of this animal is of a bright rufous brown above, and that ofthe under parts a deep black. The tail is perfectly black. The hair of thoupper parts and tail is extremely long, soft, and woolly. The eyes arelively and expressive. From the nose to the root of the tail, it measuresabout sixteen inches, and the tail itself is still longer. THE SLOW LEMUR, OR BENGAL
