Panel 5 of 8 on the four arms of the Russia Memorial at Brookwood Military Cemetery
This Panel - Panel 5 commemorates army personnel. Erected around 1983 to commemorate 620 British, 26 Canadians and an Australian who died in military service in Russia or the Soviet Union during both World Wars. The central panel of the Russia Memorial erected in 1983 at Brookwood Military Cemetery reads "In honour of the sailors soldiers and airmen of the forces of the British Commonwealth who died in Russia during two world wars. Their name liveth for evermore". Those named may have no known grave. Or they may lie in a grave which because of the Cold War & travel restrictions at that time was difficult to visit and maintain. In these unusual circumstances the CWGC accepted dual commemoration. Grave markers therefore exist in cemeteries to which access was once rarely granted and a duplicate inscription is shown on this Memorial. Sergeant Samuel George Pearse VC MM is, for example recorded on the Russia memorial while buried in a marked grave at Souset Cemetery, Archangel, North Russia. The Memorial is formed as a cross with 9 plaques on each side of each arm and these show the inscriptions of the names of those commemorated.
