Like any scientific instrument, the photographic precisioncamera requires interested study before the best results can beobtained. How true this is only those photographers andartists (amateurs, who do the work for its own sake)can realize, who know how wonderfully complex and farreaching the modern science of the photographic art actuallyis. Artistic inclination, knowledge in chemistry, physics andphys. optics, etc., are qualities a successful amateur shouldpossess if he wants to criticize an instrument, but first of allhe must have used the best instruments of the variousmakers, otherwise he has no right to defame a reliable instru- i68. ment. What would a civil engineer say if a layman wrote anarticle condemning the theodolite, the plane table and thetransit, boldly contending that a pocket transit or a pocketsextant in connection with a sketching board was all there isrequired for triangulation ? I personally value my small pocket instruments highly, espe-cially the smallest stereo cameras, still I would much ratherpart with the Baby Sibyl, the Vest Pocket Vesta, the ZeissBebe, the Stereflectoscope, etc., than to do without my WernerView Camera, my Minex, my Goerz Anschuetz, or Lechner9:18 Stereo Reflex. I mention the above instruments just toshow that I know what I am talking about. I could fill avolume just listing cameras I have used, and I would notdare to condemn one class of instruments (except the softfocus lens, which is a perversity, as it shows nature as itappears the day after). They all have their individual rightand if the amateur will only either go to a reliable d
