She returned from the Continent in time totake part in the Westminster Election of the most celebrated beauties of Englandseem to have taken part in this election, whichwas to send to Parliament Charles James Fox,of whom Mrs. Darner was a most ardent sup-porter and a connection. Mrs. Darner was oneof the three ladies who were celebrated for thefamous ladys canvass, the other two beingthe beautiful Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, 92. THE WESTMINSTER ELECTION and the well-known Mrs. Crewe. The greatbeauty of the Duchess of Devonshire entirelyeclipsed the talent and charm of her associates intheir memorable canvass, which was long talkedof by the electors, and which attracted so muchpublic attention, no less for its fights, bribery,and drunkenness, than for its political interest. On the eighth day the poll was considerablyagainst Fox. He therefore rallied his friendsaround him to make a great effort on his , Mrs. Darner, in the company ofthe Duchess of Devonshire and Mrs. Crewe,dressed in blue and buff, Mr. Foxs colours,adopted from the American Independents, setout to canvass the electors of Westminster. The electors were not content with onlya handshake with these ladies, but, in theirenthusiasm, insisted on receiving kisses. TheDuchess of Devonshire submitted even to a kissfrom a butcher, and the other ladies offeredtheir fair cheeks
