The Standing Stones of Callanish
The spectacular megalithic monument of the Standing Stones of Callanish on the Island of lewis consists of about 50 stones of Lewisian Gneiss which were erected sometime between 2900 and 2600BC, and which predate Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Egypt! 13 primary stones form a central circle some 13 metres in diameter with a central monolith standing about 5m tall. Rows of smaller satellite stones radiate to the east, south and west while a longer double row of stones form an avenue to the north.
