Photos from a recent stroll around Kirstenbosch Gardens which celebrates its centenary this year. The slopes of Kirstenbosch were used by the Khoi and by colonists until lobbyists convinced Parliament that the exceptional plants that grew there should be protected as a botanical garden. It was agreed on condition that an organisation would be formed to support the development. That organisation was the Botanical Society of South Africa and on the1st of July 1913, the estate was placed in the care of the Trustees of Kirstenbosch. Today, visitors to Kirstenbosch can see trees & plants that have been there since the the garden opened. Any plants turning 100 this year have been given a special badge of honour marking them as centenarians. Garden lovers and historians will enjoy the 40m long retrospective banner designed as a visually engaging timeline by David Davidson called “Kirstenbosch in bygone days”.
