Unloading pony in Antarctica. Expedition members (Lieutenant Henry Rennick, centre, 1881-1914) unloading a pony from the Terra Nova in January 1911 during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). The ship had arrived here on 4 January 1911. The nineteen Manchurian ponies all died, the last being shot to provide food on the journey to the South Pole. Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary expedition objectives were scientific. Led by Robert Falcon Scott, a shore party of 33 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from their journey to the South Pole.
