The Tre-mont Street subway was soon overtaxed, while the parallelbusiness thoroughfare, Washington Street, became intolerablycongested. The first subway was supplemented in turn bythe Washington Street tunnel (relieving the Tremont Streetsubway of the elevated trains) and the Cambridge subway withits own trains to the adjoining city on the north.
