Bowen's disease skin cancer. Close-up of an ulcerated lesion on the back of an 84-year-old male patient with Bowen's disease. Bowen's disease is an early form of skin cancer that may develop as a result of long-term exposure to the sun. It is easily curable as it does not metastasise (spread) and stays within the top layer of the skin (the epidermis), meaning it can be easily excised (cut out). There is a small chance that a Bowen's disease lesion will become a malignant (cancerous) squamous cell carcinoma, so early treatment is recommended.
