Uraninite in calcite. Sample of uraninite (grey) interspersed with calcite crystals (white). This radioactive mineral is an oxide of uranium, often with oxides of lead thorium and rare earth elements included, and is often referred to as pitchblende. It is an important ore of uranium, most of it mined in Congo, South Africa, Australia, and Canada. This sample is from Ontario, Canada, and measures 90 mm wide.
