Bucklers of this type areshown in works of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries dealing withfencing. Diameter, 7in. ; weight, 90Z. Purchased at the Earl of Shrewsburys sale in 1857. 48. Target of Iron (XVIth-XVIIth Century), oval, with embossedmargin. 49. Target of Iron, similar to the above, with scrollwork coarselyengraved. 50-51. Target of Steel (Late XVIth Century), embossed, chased,browned and gilt. The principal subject is the death of Charies the Bold,Duke of Burgundy, at Nancy in 1477. At the top is a figure of Victory,and the borders are richly worked in arabesque designs, masks and fruit. 53. Buckler of Brass (LateXVIth Century), coarsely en-graved with a Tudor Rose in thecentre and compartments showingthe Labours of Hercules, with theinscription : ADVLTERIO DEIANIRACONSPVRGANS OCCIDITVR CACVS ABHERCVL. OPPRIMATVR 1379. Thedate has been altered from 1579. Inthe guide books of the eighteenthcentury this piece was described as The Spanish Generals Shield (ofthe Armada) not worn by him butcarried as an ensign of honour. Thestyle of engraving suggests that it isof English or Dutch origin.
