Medieval Madonna and Child fresco in one of the oldest churches in Lucca, Tuscany, Italy, the Chiesa San Frediano, a Romanesque basilica built between 1112 and 1147.

Lucca, Tuscany, Italy: This medieval Madonna & Child fresco occupies a lunette above a doorway beside the baptistry at the west end of one of the oldest churches in the city, the 12th Century Chiesa San Frediano, a Romanesque basilica in Piazza San Frediano. The church was built between 1112 and 1147 on the site of a 7th century Lombardic basilica. Its best known treasures are the Fonte Lustrale, a 12th century baptismal font sculpted with Romanesque carvings by three different craftsmen of the stories of Moses, as well as prophets, apostles and the months of the year, and the huge golden 13th century Byzantine-style Ascension of Christ the Saviour mosaic, by Berlinghiero Berlinghieri, that decorates the facade.
