. Narrative of discovery and adventure in the polar seas and regions [microform] : with illustrations of their climate, geology, and natural history ; and an account of the whale-fishery. Natural history; Sciences naturelles. NORTH-EAST VOYAGES. 143 commences a chain of somewhat lofty mountains, the summits of which are covered with snow. The appear- ance of the country is dreary and miserable in the ex- treme ; notwithstanding which, the idea entertained by those who consider it as a mere mass of ice, partially sprinked with soil, was found quite eiToneous. Captain Litke brought home with him specimens of the different rocks and earths of which it is composed. The same navigator was appointed once more in 1824, with instructions to examine the eastern coast; but in endeavouring to penetrate between Spitzbergen and Nova Zembla he was completely repulsed by the masses of ice with which the sea was encumbered ; while his attempt to make a passiige by the Strait of Waygatz was equally defeated by contrary winds and calnjH. Hence, notwithstanding these spirited efforts on the part of the Russian govcniment, no great accession luw ken made to our knowledge of that insular territory. .3^K' IP 'IS ''\\'< ... 1.
