In readingGideon Harveys books we are introducedinto the consulting room, the apothecarysshop, the herb market, and the sick roomitself. In dealing with persons who wereliving at the time he wrote, he nearlyalways distinguished them by some (usu-ally uncomplimentary) nickname. Those who were dead either had their full namesgiven, or the disguises are so transparentthat identification is easy. There are numerous autobiographicalreferences scattered throughout his writings,and, needless to say, these are not conspicu-ous for any self-
