Thomas Haines Dudley (1819-1893), US diplomat. Dudley, a Quaker from New Jersey who trained as a lawyer, played an active role in the 1840s and 1850s in the politics of the Whig Party (dissolved 1860) and then the Republican Party (founded 1854). Dudley was US Consul to Liverpool, UK, from 1861 to 1872. His role coincided with the outbreak of the US Civil War, and he handled Secret Service matters in Liverpool. This involved attempts to prevent the Confederates building ships in Liverpool to use against the Union side in the war. He stayed on in Liverpool after the war to help settle sales of Confederate assets. Photographed circa 1880.
