Herpes simplex viruses. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a group of Herpes simplex viruses. Here, closely packed viruses are seen, each with a protein coat consisting of 162 capsomers (protein units that resemble dots). The central core of the virus contains DNA. Herpes simplex occurs in two forms: type 1 and 2. These types are visually identical, but biochemically different. Herpes simplex is a human parasite, causing a variety of infections including whitlows on the fingers or toes, and cold sores of the mouth and genitalia. Genital herpes is sexually transmitted.
