The wonders of modern mechanismA résumé of recent progress in mechanical, physical, and engineering science . nce of avertical boiler, fitted with the necessary mechanism of feed-valves, sand chambers, etc., so arranged that an air-pressureof about ten pounds per square inch catches the sand anddelivers it through a pure rubber hose, which must behandled in such a way as not to kink, because a sharpbend is always liable to be cut by the sand. In use this 20 236 WONDERS OF MODERN MECHANISM. hose is turned ou the castings and sand poured out underpressure, mucli as a garden would be watered with a hoseattached to a water-supply. While it is now possible to buy steel castings of excellentquality and uuiibrmity, in order to be sure of such it is usu-ally necessary to patronize one foundry making a specialtyof small castings, and another foundry making a specialtyof large castings, and perhaps a third making a specialtyof thin castings, such as are used in stoves. The businessinvolves a large amount of individual skill, and minorconveniences for different grades of work. Fig. 54. ^.^^^^,^^^^^. a^^. THE M.\NXF.\rTT^FE OF STEEL TRrPRES, AS C.\BRIEr> ON BY THE IT;OX-BPJnOE CO>rPANY. Sir Henry Bessemer has recently proposed an improvedmethod of malving thin steel plates direct from the fluidmetal, instead of casting into ingots and rolling down asis noAv done. His plan is to allow the metal to flow froma reservoir, in small streams of regulatable size, between MACHINE TOOLS. 237 two large rollers, which rotate slowly so as to chill themetal, at the same time drawing it in so that it passes outas a thin sheet of steel, and is led away by curved guidesbetween other and smaller rolls that steady it so that it canbe sheared off at desired lengths and piled up in a such an apparatus, Mr. Bessemer thinks that he couldmake a ton of plates the twentieth of an inch in thicknessin seven and a half minutes. If this process proves to bethe same in practice as
