The captain of Engine 22 is John , who was born in Boston, Mass.,December 5, 1865. He joined the De-partment on June 2, 1886, and was at-tached to Engine No. 8 as extraman. In1894 he was promoted foreman of EngineNo. 22, and continued to fill that positionuntil February i, 1900, when he becamecaptain. He has, therefore, had thirteenyears experience as a fireman, and dur-ing that time has fought the fiery ele-ment at numerous conflagrations in thiscity. SAN FRANCISCO FIREMEN Engine No. 22 has won laurels at manya hard-fought fire, and did good work atthe disastrous fire on Fourth street, atGoldberg, Bowen & fire on Pineand Kearny streets. At the burning ofthe Baldwin Hotel Engine No. 22 workedeleven and one-half hours, and did allthat human effort could accomplish tohelp subdue the fierce tornado of flamethat swept that huge building.
