Dr. Van Fleet was much struck with the grand masses of Lilium candidum, six feet high in one garden, and remarked that it could not be grown to such perfection in Wash- ington and, so far, there had been no success in growing it from seed. More's the pity, as this is the most beautiful and majestic of all our hardy lilies and it is immaculately pure. Advanced schedules for the great fern show to be held in Horticultural hall in September have been issued. There are sixty-four classes in all and, in addition to the cash premiums, twenty-six large and twenty-eight small medals are ofifered. There have already been promises of some large exhibits from prominent commercial growers. George W. Hamer, the genial and popular assistant manager of the Bos- ton Flower Exchange, has the sympathy of many friends in the death of his mother from a stroke, at her home in Everett, June 10, in her eighty-third year. Funeral services were held June 13, and there were many beautiful floral tributes, including one from the mem- bers of the Flower Exchange. An arrangement of the popular Lilium regale and hardy larkspur made a pleasing effect, June 11, in the win- dows of T. F. Galvin, Inc., on Park street.
