He then retired with his wife and sisterinto an inner chamber, while the enemycrowded into the house in search of him,and then, firing his pistol into a barrel ofgunpowder which he had placed there inreadiness, blew to pieces himself, his tworelatives, and his enemies. The other figure represents a SaghaiDyak. This tribe lives on the south-eastern coastof Borneo, and is remarkable for the superbcostumes of the men, who have about theman air of barbaric splendor, which they areexceedingly fond of displaying. Wearing,in common with all Dyaks, the chawat orwaist cloth, they take a pride in adorningthemselves with short tunics made of tigeror leopard skin, or rich and embroidered. (1113) STRENGTH AND ACTIVITY OF THE DYAKS. 1115 cloth; while on their heads they wear mag-nificent caps made of monkey-skin, anddecorated with the beautiful feathers of theArgus pheasant, two of the largest feathersbeing placed so that one droops over eachear. All these Dyaks have a very singularprofile, in consequence of their habit of tilingthe teeth and so reducing their bulk, thosewho have concave teeth presenting the mostcurious outline. Comparatively slight and feeble as theDyaks look by the side of the stalwart andmuscular European, their strength is reallywonderful, and enables them to perforintasks which the powerful white man couldnot by any possibility achieve.
