Peach tree short life disease (PTSL) research. Horticulturist shaving away bark with a pocket knife as he examines a tree killed by PTSL disease. PTSL disease is caused by a combination of factors, including freeze injuries, bacteria (Pseudomonas syringae), the fungus Cytospora, and the ring nematode (Criconemella xenoplax). The healthy tree to the left is growing on the new Guardian rootstock which is resistant to PTSL. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture. Photographed in the USA.
