Residents in East Durham are celebrating a financial milestone this week as community cash investment by local builder Wates Living Space has reached a staggering £20,000. The affordable housing contractor has dedicated both time and funding to a range of local projects in order to leave a lasting legacy as it delivers home improvement works to 1,000 properties in the area. The refurbishment of Hesleden Community Centre is the latest in a long line of projects to benefit from Wates support, receiving a complete internal redecoration with new tiling and flooring. Additional projects include the refurbishment of Horden Boxing Academy and the redecoration of St Bartholomew’s Church in Thornley. A number of local training initiatives have also been delivered including an apprenticeship programme, which resulted in the full-time employment of an administration trainee, as well as a two-week construction training programme for local unemployed people Wates has been working in the area since 2010 following its appointment by East Durham Homes, the Arms Length Management Organisation providing housing management services to 8,500 homes. Over the past year this has involved a £17m programme of improvements including replacing kitchens and bathrooms and the installation of new central heating systems. Joanne Jamieson, Regional Managing Director for Wates Living Space, said: “It’s really important to us to use our presence in local communities to make a tangible difference to the lives of the people living here. We’ve worked really hard over the past two years to make this a reality so it is rewarding to have reached this investment milestone. I’d like to thank all the residents for being such agreeable neighbours.
