Lymph node. Computer artwork of a section through a human lymph node. Lymph nodes are kidney-shaped structures located at intervals along lymph vessels (tubes). Each node consists of a fibrous capsule (yellow) surrounding the outer cortex and inner medula. Functions include 'filtration' of lymph (yellow blobs) by scavenging macrophage white blood cells, production and storage of both antibody-secreting B-lymphocytes involved in humoral immunity, and of T-lymphocytes involved in the cell-mediated immune response. A labyrinth of cells and cell processes in the inner medullary sinuses slow the flow of fluid through the node, encouraging the actions of lymphatic cells involved in immune response processes.
