Panamanian jumping spider Eris aurantia (family Salticidae), photographed in mid-jump towards its prey, a cricket. The Salticids are a family of hunting spiders, named for their ability to jump from two to twenty times their body length. They have very acute binocular vision, which allows the prey to be detected & also provides good accuracy when making jumps between twigs. Having detected their prey, they stalk it & gradually creep closer. Finally they jump the last few centimetres, from a standing start, and grab hold of the prey with their forelegs.
