SymorJiynchus Pyynwua (Gmel.) Geog. Dist.—• Coasts and islands of the North Pacific, from Unalaska thi lugh the Aleutian chain to Kamtschatka. From what is known of this species it appears that its general habits are simi- lar to those of the Least Auklet, but ii is far from being as common. Another name by which it is known is Red-nosed Auk, the bill in adult birds being of a deep ver- milion, tipped with bluish. A tuft of filamentous feathers on the head curves for- ward so' that it hangs directly over the bill. According to Nelson the species is un- known from the Fur Seal Islands and we have no knowledge of its numbers and dis- tribution in the Aleutian chain. It breeds abundantly on Near Islands, but it does not winter there. It also breeds on the Commander Islands. -white or taken on. i&.
