California, USA. Image 2 of 2. Surface temperature of California during a heatwave on 2 May 2004. Blue is coldest, followed by green and yellow, and red is hottest. The cool green/blue area at left is the Pacific Ocean. Surface temperatures in southern California exceeded 55 degrees Celsius, while air temperatures reached 37 degrees. The heatwave resulted in an early start for the wildfire season in California, with at least six major forest fires having been reported by 5 May 2004. Data for this image were obtained by the moderate resolution imaging spectrometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite. See E070/537 for a true colour satellite image of the same view.
