Two late pithouses built C7th/8thAD by Basketmakers (Anasazi, Ancestral Puebloans) at Mesa Verde, Colorado: underground living rooms with firepits, stones on edge, and holes for posts supporting roofs of wooden beams, brush and soil. The stone basin (metate) was used for grinding grains. One house was destroyed by fire.
