Weather balloon and instruments. This is a captive (tethered) weather balloon. It remains anchored to the ground rather than being released to obtain data by ascending through the atmosphere. It is a BALTHUM (Balloon Temperature and Humidity) barrage balloon, designed to measure temperature and humidity. It also includes a turbulence probe, with the instruments seen here measuring wind speed and direction. The data gathered is used by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. Photographed in the UK.
