Gorton was born inWindsor, Connecticut, May 10, 1868, andis a son of Horace G. and Mary B. (Gris-wold) Gorton. He was educated in thepublic schools of Hartford, and from hisboyhood was a leader in every circle inwhich he moved. In 1882 he entered theemploy of the company with which he isnow identified, but after a year and ahalf returned to school for a course ofspecial study. In April, 1884. he wasagain at his desk with the same company,in the capacity of clerk. He enjoys thedistinction of never having been con-nected with any other company or busi- 186. During a part ofeach year Mr. Gorton has traveled forthe company, but his chief activity is indrilling men as insurance salesmen. Inthis work he has met with remarkablesuccess, seeming to possess the power toinfuse his own genial personality into theprospective salesman. Through his ex-tensive travels Mr. Gorton has becomewidely known throughout the East andin many more remote sections. Amongthe men with whom he is associated in abusiness way he is acknowledged one ofthe big men in the insurance business, andhis abounding vitality and unfailing tactmake him an invaluable member of theworking force of the company. Mr. Gorton is gifted, in large measure,with that quality known as personalmagnetism, and in social circles as wellas in the world of men and affairs he iswarmly welcomed.
