Chișinău (also historically known as Kishinev) is the capital city of the Republic of Moldova, which gained its independence from the USSR in 1991. With a population of 500,000, Chișinău is Moldova's main industrial and commercial center. It is a vibrant city, with ubiquitous construction sites and a blend of the former Soviet days and of Western modernity. The state owned CFM railways (Calea Ferată din Moldova) own a large train depot next to Chisinau's central station. A few modern trains have recently been introduced in the country, while older Soviet times diesel locomotives and carriages get refurbished. Russian is still the language used by railway workers, though it has ceased to be the national language of Moldova since independence.
