Avery Point Lighthouse, Groton, Connecticut


Avery Point Lighthouse, Groton, Connecticut, United States (New England) Avery Point Lighthouse was only active as a navigational aid from 1944 to 1967, and it never had a keeper. It was the lase light built in Connecticut. It was completed in 1943, but was not lit until May 1944. In 1969, the land was returned to the State of Connecticut at no cost, and became part of the University of Connecticut at Avery Point campus. Restoration took place from 2000-2006. The New London Harbor Lighthouse and New London Ledge Lighthouse can also be viewed from the campus. Directions: Follow CT 349. Turn onto Benham Road. Turn left onto Eastern Point Road, driving a little over a mile. The road will lead to the entrance of the University of Connecticut at Avery Point. Enter the campus, following the circular driveway. The lighthouse is owned by the University of Connecticut. The grounds are open to the public, but the tower is closed.
