But the transformation this theatrehas undergone is such, that in 1839 a fine cropof tobacco was raised in the arena, which is about50 paces in diameter. On an eminence at one end of the city, opposite tothe termination of the grand street are another tem-ple and theatre. The hill on which they stood wasconnected with the princely street by a magnificentsemicircle of Ionic columns, 57 of which are stillstanding. Their height was varied with the risingground, to give a uniform level to the whole entabla-ture. This immense theatre, larger than that ofBacchus at Athens, and capable of containing 8,000spectators, was partly cut in the rock and partly proscenium is very perfect, and embellishedwithin by five richly decorated niches, which are con-nected together
