Sgt Mapham was a press photographer for the Leicester Mercury before the Second World War. On joining the Army Film and Photographic Unit, he served with No 1 Section in North Africa and the Middle East during 1942 - 1943, before transferring to No 5 Section to cover North West Europe. On D Day, Sgt Mapham landed under heavy firewith 13/18 Hussars on Queen Beach at hours
