Tarantula nebula. Combined X-ray, optical and ultra-violet image of the Tarantula nebula (NGC 2070) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This nebula is one of the largest and most active nebula known. In this image, X-ray emission is in red, optical light is seen in green, and ultra- violet emission in blue. The red areas are made up of extremely hot gas, at around 1,000,000 degrees celsius. The green areas are hydrogen gas ionised by powerful nearby stars, and the blue points of light are the massive and powerful stars themselves. Many new stars are being formed in the nebula's heart, and a globular cluster may result.
