Masked mummy. Egyptian archaeologist and Director of Pyramids Zahi Hawass examining a masked Egyptian mummy. This preserved body was found in the Valley of the Mummies, a six kilometre stretch of tunnels and burial chambers carved into the sandstone of the Bahariya Oasis, Egypt. These tombs date back to around the third century AD during the Roman occupation of Egypt. When the site was discovered in 1996, 105 mummies were found. Most of these were covered in gilt and painted with religious scenes. It is estimated that the site could contain as many as 10,000 mum- mies. Photographed in the Western Desert, Egypt.
