Inflamed salivary gland. Light micrograph of a section through a submandibular salivary gland that has become inflamed. The inflammation is due to the gland's duct (large white space) being obstructed by a sialolith (stone). The obstruction has also caused the atrophy of secretory cells (dark purple, at left), the formation of fibrous (scar) tissue around the duct (light purple) and the infiltration of of chronic inflammatory cells (purple cells at top and bottom right of the duct). All these changes are collectively known as chronic sialadenitis. Symptoms include pain and swelling.
