Anak Krakatau volcano. Satellite image of the volcano Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatau) showing the crater (circular, centre), surrounded by lava flows (red) and black ash, and new plant growth around the eastern shores (green, right). North is at top. Anak Krakatau emerged in 1927 from the seas that cover the remains of Krakatau, a volcano that erupted so violently in 1883 that two thirds of the island collapsed into the sea. Anak Krakatau has been erupting and growing ever since, and is a natural laboratory to watch the development of a new ecosystem. Anak Krakatau lies in the Sunda Strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra. Photographed by the Ikonos satellite on 11th June, 1998.
