Lung blood clot, post-mortem. This is a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot (black) that has occurred inside a lung. An embolism occurs when an abnormal blood clot (thrombus) blocks a blood vessel, in this case a pulmonary vein. Post-mortem examinations, also known as autopsies, are carried out to identify a cause of death, and to assess the health of a dead person's organs.
