Perforated patterns canFIG. 139. be made for stamping the different parts of the design. For collars and other society vestments the cardboard foundationis pasted directly on the velvet forming the collars and covered with thebullion. Ivy leaves, arranged as a vine, is a favorite design for collars. Theleaves are cut from cardboard. Sometimes one thickness and sometimestwo thicknesses of the cardboard is used for a leaf. After the leaves of thepattern have been placed in position the bullion is worked over them, beginning at one edge of a leaf and ending the bullion in the center. Oneside of a leaf finished, the reverse side is then worked, and a thread ofanother shade of bullion is carried down the center to form the CHURCH AND BULLION EMBROIDERIES. m After all the leaves are worked, the stems and tendrils of the vine are to beworked directly on the velvet, without any cardboard foundation. Whenoutline stitch is desired for this purpose the bullion should be cut just thelength of a stitch, and each time an outline stitch is taken with the threadedneedle a piece of bullion should be thread::! on the needle. In making shields, eagles and other large devices, the foundation iscut out of cardboard, and some portion of the design will have four or fivethicknesses of cardboard, one over the other, and each succeeding piece asize smaller than thefirst. This gives amore raised androunded effect to thework. In making ban-ners, a piece of stoutholland should betacked in a frame, andthe entire designshould be stampedupon it and same designshould also bestamped upon thesilk composing thebanner, and this ^^^ ^4o. should be stretched in another frame.
