SYKES, Martin Luther, railroad manager,officer, and president, was born in Springfield, Mass.,March 26, 1826. He is descendedfrom Richard Sykes, who emigrat-ed from England in 1630 to 1633with the company that came tothe country with Gov. Winthropand William Pynchon, Esq.,whoseson, Richard Sykes, settled inSpringfield, Mass., and was madea freeman May 13, 1640. Thename Sykes or Sikes is derivedfrom the Anglo-Saxon sich, a watercourse or water furrow. Ancientdocuments, in Latin and English,show that some of these were lo-cated at Flockton, in the parish ofThornhill, near Leeds, Eng., aboutthe year 1200, when Agnes delSicke acquired lauds at Flock-ton.
