After learning in 1653 that Parliament was attempting to stay in session despite an agreement to dissolve, and having failed to come up with a working constitution Oliver Cromwell called in his musketeers and exclaimed, "You are no Parliament; I say you are no Parliament; begone, and give place to honester men". He then seized the records, snatched the bill from the hands of the clerk, drove the members out at the point of the bayonet, locked the doors, put the key in his pocket, and returned to Whitehall.
